Response to Initiative on EU taxonomy - environmental objective

2 May 2023

In line with IATA's position on the matter, ITA Airways fully supports the inclusion of aviation in the proposed Taxonomy Delegated Act; furthermore, as a hard to abate sector, we regard inclusion as essential in financing the sectors transition to net zero by 2050. - We recognize that alignment with the proposed criteria, developed by the Platform on Sustainable Finance over a 2.5 year period, will be challenging for the sector but we support its ambitious approach to financing innovation whilst preserving environmental integrity, and recognize the proposed criteria were established in a transparent way with support of all members of the Platform including NGOs and key external stakeholders. - ITA Airways appreciates that the proposed criteria for aviation are encouraging a faster replacement of old generation of aircraft with new more efficient ones, an enhanced use of SAF (going beyond the objectives of the EU Fit for 55 Package) and the introduction into the market of ultra-efficient or zero emission aircraft. - We stand ready to work with the Commission to operationalize the proposed criteria through supporting the development of guidance for manufacturers, lessors and airlines (and their auditors) which would address standard definitions including triggering events, ensure compliance with competition rules and address issues associated with the application of the rules for non-EU operators. - Together with IATA, we do recommend that the Commission ensures that any future updates to the Taxonomy rules reflect the rapid research, development and deployment of transition technologies and processes that will result from aviations inclusion in the Taxonomy Delegated Act. - Aviation is a vital enabler of business, culture and family connectivity and integration, both within the EU (and particularly to remote regions and island nations) and from the EU to trading partners around the world. We sincerely hope that the EU will seize this opportunity to support the transition of EU and global aviation to net-zero and thereby solidify its leadership position globally in the area of sustainable finance.
