Response to Soil Health Law – protecting, sustainably managing and restoring EU soils

Soils provide the basis; they have a fundamental role in the functioning of ecosystems and provide immense ecosystem services to society. Wageningen University and Research (WUR) holds Europe’s largest soil science cluster, performing both fundamental and applied science, leading and contributing to many H2020 projects like RECARE, SOILCARE, LANDMARK and EJP SOIL. Furthermore, WUR supports the ministry of agriculture, food and environment by providing a knowledge base for the implementation for the Dutch soil strategy. As such, Wageningen-UR acknowledges and supports the vision of the new European Soil Strategy to have all soils in healthy conditions by 2050 and to make protection, sustainable use and restoration of soils the new normal. To reach healthy soils by 2050, it is crucial that the EU develops and adopts a coherent framework, preferably to be legally implemented at national scale to protect, restore and sustainably manage soils. As a contribution to this call for evidence, the scientists of WUR identified selected points on which they already provide evidence in relation to the objectives and policy option of a Soil Health Law perspective.In the attachment you can find reference to reports and evidence.
