Response to Revision of the Energy Performance of Buildings Directive 2010/31/EU

22 Mar 2021

KONE Corporation welcomes the initiative of the European Commission to revise the Energy Performance of Buildings Directive (EPBD). The full potential of energy efficiency across all the sectors of the economy and, in particular in the building sector, needs to be untapped to achieve a reduction of at least 55% of greenhouse gas emissions by 2030. Moreover, as recognized by the International Energy Agency, 76% of the EU emission reductions required to keep temperature increases below 1.5°C must come from energy efficiency. In light of these goals, KONE would like to bring to your attention the following points: • KONE is in favor of revising the EPBD to translate the actions proposed in the Renovation Wave and the increased ambition towards building decarbonization into legislation. A timely and effective revision of the EPBD has the potential to contribute to a deep economic transformation for a green recovery post COVID-19 pandemic. • KONE recommends amending the EPBD to include lifts, escalators and moving walks in the scope of the EPBD and in any other recommendation or norm concerning energy efficiency in existing buildings. • Energy efficiency of buildings represents a core focus area for KONE. In Europe KONE has solutions available on the market to reduce the energy consumption of lifts, escalators and moving walks in new and existing buildings in order to contribute to the overall aim of at least 32.5% improvement in energy efficiency by 2030. • By including lifts, escalators and moving walks among the technical building systems, KONE can contribute to reducing the overall energy consumption of the buildings. KONE requests the Commission to recognize the role of lifts, escalators and moving walks in the work towards energy efficient buildings and calls on the Commission to include lifts, escalators and moving walks in the scope of the EPBD.
