Response to Modernisation of the EU legislation for on-farm animal welfare for certain animals

16 Jul 2025

1. If the EU bans cages, then the import of caged animal products from third countries into the EU must be banned. 2. While the EU continues to import animal products from third countries that are not produced in accordance with EU animal welfare and environmental standards, the EU should provide compensation mechanisms for EU producers to reduce distortions of competition. 3. If the EU plans to ban cages, appropriate funding (both grants and loans for entrepreneurs) should be provided to enable Member States to implement this policy. Let this serve as a reminder - if EU wants to act as a pioneer and be an example to the rest of the world, how things should be done, then EU must not punish it's farmers, who are the only one producing food, with stricter requirements, while allowing whatever into EU Single Market.
