Response to Towards a Circular, Regenerative and Competitive Bioeconomy

23 Jun 2025

NG Nordics key messages - CO should be seen as a viable raw material for biological processes. Biological processes can transform both captured carbon and biobased feedstock into plastics; therefore, CCU should be treated equally to biobased sources in the EU Bioeconomy Strategy. - EU funding is needed to ensure that European industry has a level playing field with global competition. - CCU-based plastics face many of the same challenges as bio-based plastics, and the EU should create incentives to promote the uptake of these new and innovative materials.

Response to EU emissions trading system for maritime, aviation and stationary installations, and market stability reserve - review

16 Jun 2025

NG Nordics key messages: NG Nordic supports the full inclusion of municipal waste incineration installations in the EU ETS. The inclusion would both incentivize decarbonizing Waste-to-Energy (WtE) sector and boost recycling. Hazardous waste incineration should remain out of scope of the ETS Directive, as its primary function is not energy production but safe destruction of harmful substances. Landfilling of municipal waste and other energy recovery technologies such as gasification should also be included in the ETS together with WtE. The ETS revision must ensure fair competition in carbon-based product manufacturing. Non-permanent CCU, such as storing CO2 to chemicals and plastics, should move to a downstream surrender obligation. Carbon removals should be integrated into the ETS.
