Response to Climate change mitigation and adaptation taxonomy

8 Dec 2020

With respect to biofuels, the taxonomy reflects a political, even cultural consensus, but not one rooted in any empirical reality. Conclusions about crop based biofuels five and 10 years ago were based on price predictions, agricultural assumptions, and obsolete technology descriptions that were simply wrong. While the conclusions have become part of the EU climate aesthetic, they are anti-scientific and a failure of policy. If the analysis were re-performed today using the best available data, crop based biofuels would come out as having made contributions and achieved technology advances no less stunning than wind or solar, and so policy based on marginalizing (or removing) them is simple climate denial--- not to mention stunningly pro-oil. Since 2012, the Commission no longer tries to substantiate its anti-biofuels policy proposals- because it can't. Land grabbing didn't happen and biofuels have had no discernible impact on prices (it was all oil-driven prices movements), and with no price impacts there can't have been ILUC-- by definition. Deforestation happened the last decade for the same reason it has happened every decade of the last few centuries, and blaming biofuels misses both the point and a strong solution. Sadly, the Commission is more interested in saving face than saving the climate, so while it knows that its anti-biofuels rhetoric was all wrong, it continues it with platitudes and does not have the basic integrity to say "We were wrong."
