Response to Revision of the EU’s energy security framework
13 Oct 2025
Samorka Icelandic Energy and Utilities, welcomes the initiative by the European Commission to revise the EU energy security framework. Iceland is a non-EU country but adopts EU laws and rules on energy and utilities through the agreement on the European Economic Area (EEA). Iceland is not inter-connected with the European energy grid but shares many of the same challenges as other European countries in protecting critical infrastructure against emerging threats such as cyber-attacks and sabotage. EU Member States and an EEA-EFTA state such as Iceland share common interests in building and maintaining a resilient and flexible energy security network. Samorka looks forward to following next steps of this initiative by the European Commission and hopes that this response for the Call to evidence will be useful in the work ahead. See attached the full feedback from Samorka.

Samorka, Icelandic Energy and Utilities, welcomes the upcoming Geothermal Action Plan by the European Commission, to unlock the vast potential of geothermal energy as a source for heating, cooling and generation of electricity in Europe. The Action Plan will be a part of EUs Heating and Cooling Strategy. For decades Iceland has been Europes leading geothermal powerhouse. This deep base of geothermal knowledge and experience makes Iceland a unique partner in multiple business and science projects to expand and develop geothermal energy utilisation in Europe EU Energy Commissioner Dan Jörgensen has stated that geothermal energy has an important role to play in the decarbonisation of the EUs energy system. This is why the European Geothermal Action Plan, due in Q1 of 2026, needs to be comprehensive, containing practical measures to accelerate the utilisation of geothermal energy in Europe. Samorka and its member companies are ready to contribute to reach this goal and look forward to participation in the policy making process. See attached Samorka's full input and feedback.
