Response to EU cardiovascular health plan

12 Sept 2025

Given the substantial risk factor posed by alcohol for the cardiovascular health of the people of Europe, Scottish Health Action on Alcohol Problems (SHAAP) endorses the submission made by the European Alcohol Policy Alliance (Eurocare). To have the biggest impact on reducing the harm caused by alcohol to cardiovascular health, SHAAP encourages EU action in line with the World Health Organization's recommendations to increase tax (or minimum unit price), restrict marketing and restrict availability of alcohol (https://www.who.int/publications/i/item/9789240091078). In addition to this, SHAAP strongly supports the recommendations by Eurocare to empower consumers to make informed decisions by placing basic information on ingredients and nutrition, together with warnings on the clear, established risk to cardiovascular (and other) health directly on alcoholic drink packaging.
