Response to Sustainable products - disclosure of information on unsold consumer products

9 Jul 2025

SHEIN feedback on the Implementing Regulation on the disclosure of information on unsold consumer products As a global fashion and lifestyle e-retailer, SHEIN welcomes the opportunity to provide feedback on the draft Implementing Regulation on the disclosure of information on unsold consumer products. Overall, SHEIN supports the overarching goals of the Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR) to improve the sustainability of products placed on the EU market. In particular, we support measures aimed at enhancing transparency and accountability regarding the disposal of unsold consumer products. We are committed to contributing constructively to this process and stand ready to collaborate with the European Commission in this important step in addressing textile waste, including by sharing more information about our on-demand, data-driven business model which is inherently aligned with these objectives. Reducing unsold inventory through on-demand production We are fully aware of the environmental impact of overproduction in the fashion industry and recognise the need to introduce measures that disincentivise the destruction of unsold goods as one of the sources of textile waste. Our lean, on-demand, customer-driven production model is well-aligned with the ESPRs goals and with the proposed ban on the destruction of unsold clothing, footwear, and clothing accessories. By leveraging our digitalised supply chain and analyse demand signals from our customers from the way they engage with our app and website, SHEIN can more accurately assess popular styles that our customers want. New styles are launched in small initial batches of 100 to 200 pieces, and we closely evaluate customer interest and demand before procuring additional pieces. This results in less inventory waste and minimises the environmental impact associated with unsold goods by tailoring the number of produced garments to customer demand. Thanks to this approach, the unsold inventory of SHEIN-branded products consistently remains in the low single digits, compared to the industry average of 25-40% [1]. Encouraging more circular business models We are constantly making efforts to transition to a more circular business model. While we continue working on addressing overproduction at our level, we also try to encourage customers to engage in circular behaviour and extend the life cycle of apparel as a complementary effort to avoid destruction of products. This is why SHEIN launched initiatives such as SHEIN Exchange, a peer-to-peer resale platform that enables customers to buy and sell pre-owned SHEIN items. In 2024, 6.78 million new users joined the SHEIN Exchange platform, and a third of respondents in our 2024 Circularity Study reported reselling SHEIN items on SHEIN Exchange (where available in their markets). About SHEIN SHEIN is a leading global fashion and lifestyle e-retailer and marketplace, serving customers in more than 150 countries. Europe is a key region for SHEIN and we have continued to invest in building our footprint in several key European locations including Ireland where we have our EMEA HQ, as well as Belgium, France, Germany, Italy and Poland. SHEINs competitiveness is driven by our business model, using insight and analytics to drive our on-demand manufacturing technology which connects suppliers to an agile supply chain that reduces dramatically production waste. This allows SHEIN to deliver a variety of affordable products to customers around the world.
