Response to A EU hydrogen strategy

3 Jun 2020

The „European Clean Hydrogen Alliance“ initiative is a strong way to boost better coordination amongst stakeholders and its target should be to aid PPP in reaching targets and reduce fragmentation amongst member states and various parties. Awareness is an important metric in accelerating the energy transition as the general-public and oftentimes even decision-making parties have been either not sufficiently educated or purposely left aside. Clarifying terms such as the list of alternative fuels should made as per the „EU Alternative Fuels Infrastructure“ evaluation in removing fossil fuels for improved clarity, as they do not help meeting carbon neutrality targets. Blue and to an extent grey hydrogen are the new „norm“ in transitional fuels, while the aim should be to rapidly boost the production of green hydrogen. Bringing down the cost of technology is amongst one of the key targets. For end-users, correct transparent information on metrics should always be readily available not just on a study with limited access. As in the end, business beats targets 30 years from now and increased transparency is already a sufficient tool to start reducing costs. Regional support for overcoming barriers such as production, infrastructure and higher initial cost should be increased to allow more regions access to faster adoption support. Research & Development requires additional resources on a European level to boost the innovation strength of the region and allow for faster breakthroughs, which could reduce costs of technology and/or cheaper production of renewable hydrogen. This will also greatly benefit Strategic Value Chains and help formulate roadmaps.
