Response to Action plan against cyberbullying
26 Sept 2025
Somis Enterprises Oy (SomeBuddy or Someturva) welcomes the European Commission's initiative to develop an Action Plan Against Cyberbullying. We agree that online bullying must be addressed in a coordinated manner at both the European Union and national levels. In our work, we see the devastating consequences that online harassment and cyberbullying can have. The digital aspect exacerbates the harm, as bullying is not limited to the local community but reaches a larger audience for everyone to see. SomeBuddy is a company specializing in protecting and supporting our users from online harassment and bullying. Our services currently extend to protecting all schools within approximately 50 municipalities. In January 2025, we published an annual report on our operations in 2024. The report compiles statistical data on cases reported to SomeBuddy in 2024 and includes an analysis of current phenomena that emerged from these cases. The report also provides data on the psychological and social effects observed in victims during these situations. The report (in Finnish) is attached to this letter. We see in our work that the consequences of cyberbullying are vast for the individuals who are bullied, as well as for the communities around them. The consequences range from psychological harm such as anxiety, depression, and self-harm, even persistent psychological trauma, to social problems like absence from school and isolation. The annual report reveals how cyberbullying often constitutes a criminal offense and how social media crimes encountered by children and young people have increased from the previous year. The number of situations grew particularly among elementary school students. For example, the spread of assault and degradation videos is a major challenge. A humiliating video of oneself that goes viral often causes serious consequences. According to our report, requests for help related to assault and degradation videos came from students of all ages, most often from those aged 11 to 14. There is a threat that increasingly radical content will gain favor with algorithms. Allowing content that reinforces the culture of bullying, often with racists, sexist, and ableist undertones, leads to a situation where only a few voices are heard, and the democratic rights of those subjected to bullying are undermined. We consider it critically important that there has been an awakening to the worrying trend of cyberbullying at both the European Union and national levels. It's essential for us to maintain discussion about online safety and its impacts on the entire society, and to continue developing new, more effective practices. SomeBuddy is committed to actively participating in this discussion and helping to resolve this societal problem.
