Response to EU Civil Society Strategy

Migrant led organizations such as ours are an important part of civil society. As the voice of migrants, we are currently affected in two ways by the shrinking spaces for NGOs: on the one hand, we have to defend ourselves against hostility and defamation directed at NGOs in general, and on the other hand, authentic voices from the migrant community are becoming less and less welcome in social discourses that are shifting further and further to the right. Decades of struggle for greater representation seem to have been replaced at a stroke by the old principle that it is better to talk about people than to talk with them. We see the results of this development, among other things, in the fact that we get fewer and fewer opportunities to acquire funding for our work. We therefore very much welcome an initiative on the part of the EU to amplify our voices.
