Response to A European Strategy for AI in science – paving the way for a European AI research council

5 Jun 2025

Springer Nature is grateful for the opportunity to comment on the European strategy for AI in science. We work closely with a large global community of academic researchers and educators who want to solve problems, disseminate their ideas and leave the world better than they found it through their work. With over 2,000 employees in the EU and 482,000 primary research articles and 14,000 books published in 2024, we recognise the potential of artificial intelligence for science and scholarly publishing, both within the EU and beyond. As an academic publisher, we believe research and innovation open doors to discovery. We have been using artificial intelligence (AI) for over ten years to help researchers get published faster, to find relevant content more quickly, to make sure research can be trusted and to reduce barriers to equity. Our AI strategy combines expanding technical expertise with our commitment to harnessing the technologys powers in an ethically responsible way. We continue to embrace AI as it will undoubtedly improve the experience of our customers and wider community. However, to create a robust ecosystem for AI innovation, there needs to be a balance between the advancement of AI in science and the needs of rights holders to retain control over the usage of their content. Europe has been pioneering scientific publishing for decades and is home to world-renowned researchers, including Nobel Prize winners, discoverers of new vaccines, innovators and start-ups. AI will hold an important position in the European economy and should be further encouraged and strengthened so Europe can continue to play a crucial global role. Springer Nature is a natural stakeholder and ally in shaping a competitive European research sector that can thrive and lead in the digital economy. Summary of Recommendations for an EU Strategy for AI in Science Adhere to the same high standards as the collective body of traditional scientific content. It must be accurate, comprehensive, up to date, and transparent. Any AI usage in science must build on high-quality content only and provide provenance, citation, and attribution. Allow the current copyright and intellectual property (IP) frameworks to continue incentivising and rewarding the production of high-quality, reliable information to drive EU competitiveness, enabling researchers and publishers to establish provenance and attribution two key enablers of a healthy research ecosystem. Balance the goal of AI uptake in science with measures to address its limitations and misuse, including societal, scientific and environmental risks.
