Feedback from Stena on the European Commission draft delegated act supplementing Regulation (EU) 2020/852 Stena AB is a privately held Swedish company and activities within Ferries, Shipping, Offshore drilling, Real estate and investments in new businesses. The group has a 3.5 billion € turnover and 15.00 employees and own, charter or manage more than 150 vessels worldwide. One of Stena AB’s biggest subsidiary is Stena Line which is one of the world’s leading ferry companies, with 38 vessels serving 17 routes between ten countries in northern Europe. Stena Line also owns five ports and controls a further ten. Every year, Stena Line carries close to 7.5 million passengers, 1.7 million cars and 2.1 million cargo units in Europe. Stena is active in the challenge of finding sustainable energy sources for future and has among other things introduces the world’s first ferry fueled on Methanol. Main messages 1. In order to ensure innovation and drive transition towards CO2 zero emission operation we ask you to revisit the threshold of 50% emission reduction and suggest that the threshold until 2025 should be set to 25% for all type of vessels. 2. Allowing the usage of additional metrics to the Energy Efficiency Design index (EEDI) in the TSC are vital to ensure that the top most energy efficient vessels in each segment are covered. 3. There is a need to make sure that vessels may be included independently of vessel age. EEDI, which is a late invention, disqualifies older vessels that may be as efficient or ever substantially better than a newer vessel with an EEDI value reaching the target of -10%. There is no correlation between efficiency and vessel age.
