Response to Joint Communication: "The European Union and Latin America and the Caribbean: A renewed partnership"

27 Feb 2018

The Coordination Europe-Haiti (www.coeh.eu), a European-wide network of NGOs and CSOs advocating for sustainable development and human rights in Haiti, would like to thank the European Commission for the opportunity to contribute to the consultation about the EU’s review of its relations with Latin America and the Caribbean. As a platform representing a wide range of Haitian civil society organisations vis-à-vis the EU’s institutions, we would like to raise a few issues that are relevant for the EU-Haiti relations in their regional context. One of our member organisations, Woord en Daad Foundation from the Netherlands, responds to this consultation on behalf of the network. Notwithstanding some positive trends in the Latin American and Caribbean region over the past years, ‘social gains over the past 15 years have become more vulnerable to short term political and economic fluctuations’, as a recent report commissioned by the European Parliament rightly points out. Poverty and persistent, sometimes rising inequality are a matter of concern in countries like Nicaragua, El Salvador, Bolivia and Haiti. These broader issues should remain central in any future EU engagement with the region, in particular with Haiti. In our attached submission we as attention for the broad relationship between the EU and Haiti in a wider context, with specific attention to diplomacy, human rights, trade, development cooperation and disaster preparedness.
