Response to Review of poultry marketing standards

We call on the European Commission to delete the minimum liver weights requirement for duck and goose livers used for the production of foie gras (Art 1, point 3) in the EU Regulation on marketing poutrymeat standards. Force-feeding is a crime in the majority of the EU states. Independent studies show that force-feeding is inherently incompatible with animal welfare. Therefore this practice should be banned completely. Impact assessment on the consequences of the requirement of minimum liver weights on animal welfare, consumer choice and consequences for farmers have not been conducted. Many consumers lack knowledge about the production of foie gras and force feeding and are not able to make an informed decision. We also feel that promotion of the European tradition of foie gras produced by force-feeding undermines the worlds image of EU as animal welfare-friendly.
