Response to Revision of EU Ambient Air Quality legislation

We welcome the opportunity to share our views on the revision of EU rules on air quality and measures to address air pollution. Air pollution continues to be a major health and environmental problem in Europe. Despite improvements in air quality over recent decades, countries and cities across Europe still struggle to meet EU limits, and a significant share of the EU population continues to be exposed to levels of air pollution in excess of WHO guidelines for what is considered necessary to ensure the protection of human health. We therefore welcome and support the Commission’s initiative to update the Air Quality Directives. From our perspective, the review of the Ambient Air Quality Directives should: 1. strive towards the zero pollution ambition, and align EU standards with WHO recommendations and scientific evidence 2. address pollution from particulate matter as a matter of priority 3. go hand in hand with a review of instruments to address pollution at source See attached 2 pager which elaborates on the above points.
