Response to A comprehensive approach to mental health
3 Feb 2023
Suicide prevention is a critical issue globally, as well as in the European Union (EU). It affects not only individuals and families but also entire communities. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), suicide is one of the leading causes of death in the EU, particularly among young people. It is estimated that every year, over 30,000 people die by suicide in the EU. In recent years, the number of suicides in the EU has been on the rise, making suicide prevention an important issue for policymakers and healthcare professionals. Preventing suicides in the EU is important because it saves lives, reduces suffering and trauma for loved ones, and can lead to a more positive and productive society. Effective suicide prevention efforts can help individuals who are struggling with mental health issues to receive the support they need and can help reduce the risk of suicide. One of the ways the EU can support suicide prevention is by investing in mental health services and resources. This can include providing access to crisis hotlines, counseling services, and support groups for those who are struggling with suicidal thoughts. Additionally, the EU can work to enhance mental health literacy and reduce the stigma surrounding mental health issues, which can prevent people from recognizing the issues and seeking the help they need. Another important aspect of suicide prevention in the EU is promoting public awareness and education. This can include educating individuals, particularly the gatekeepers and healthcare providers, on the warning signs of suicide and providing information on how to help someone who may be struggling. The EU can also work to promote public education programs that aim to increase understanding and empathy for individuals who are struggling with mental health issues and suicidal thoughts, as well as encourage people to reach out to those in need. Furthermore, the EU can facilitate suicide prevention by stimulating the media to report on suicide in a respectful and responsible manner. Finally, it is essential for the EU to work with local communities, organizations, and governments to create a comprehensive approach to suicide prevention. This can involve promoting research, developing and implementing policies and programs that promote mental health, supporting individuals who are or are at risk of struggling with mental health issues, limiting access to means of suicide, as well as working to address the underlying social and economic factors that can contribute to suicide.
