Response to EU Strategy on victims' rights (2020-2024)

15 Mar 2020

Human Rights Voice Lithuania (HRVLT) is pleased to see the Commission's plans to further advance and ensure the human rights of victims. When drafting the EU Strategy on victims' rights HRVLT asks the Commission to pay special attention to victims of hate crimes because of how severe these kind of crimes can be both for the victims themselves and the community sharing the common characteristic of the victim. The strategy should not only aim to help direct victims but also to ensure the rights of indirect victims. Moreover, we hope to see specific measures in the strategy aimed at specific vulnerable social groups such as people with disabilities, Roma people, the LGBT+ community and etc. These vulnerable groups have specific needs when they experience hate crimes that have to be taken into account. In addition, we suggest to review the national transposition of previous directives on victim's rights to make sure that all member states are in line with the current EU legal standards.
