Response to Pathways to School Success

4 Jun 2021

World Youth Alliance (WYA) fully supports the initiative of the EU Commission, entitled “Pathways to School Success” that seeks to address the problems that the European Education Area (EEA) faces today. As a youth-led and youth-focused NGO that works on promotion of human dignity, World Youth Alliance Europe is particularly concerned about the issue of Early School Leaving (ESL) as education enables an authentic understanding of the human person and of his potential, and fosters respect for self and others in solidarity. Education is key to equipping people with opportunities to thrive as individuals and as members of their communities and fostering human creativity and ingenuity facilitating prosperity, equality. It is essential that the policies to be implemented by Member-States especially put emphasis on inclusion and make special reference to the needs of vulnerable groups, such as persons with disabilities and students coming from migrant backgrounds. WYA believes that true inclusion can only be attained if students are educated thoroughly about the importance of solidarity, while taking into account the fact that European society is one that should be united in diversity. Article 1 of the EU Charter of Fundamental Rights states that “Human dignity is inviolable. It must be respected and protected”. We believe that education is more than just transferring knowledge, it is also instilling values and allowing the person to flourish and achieve his or her full potential. Each child should be aware of their inherent worth and dignity, and through this awareness, they will also gain a greater understanding of the importance of human rights. (full feedback attached)
