Yunex Traffic Response to the European Commissions Consultation on the Apply AI Strategy 03 June 2025 Yunex Traffic welcomes the European Commissions initiative to develop a comprehensive Apply AI Strategy and appreciates the opportunity to contribute to this important consultation. As a global leader in intelligent traffic systems and a long-standing partner of ERTICO ITS Europe, we support the Commissions ambition to position Europe as a global AI leader while ensuring ethical, safe, and sustainable deployment of AI technologies. Key Recommendations 1. Apply Functional Risk-Based AI Regulation in Mobility We echo ERTICOs position that AI implementation in mobility should be assessed based on functional risk rather than sectoral classification. Traffic control centers, for example, should not be automatically classified as high-risk without a nuanced understanding of their operational context. This approach preserves space for innovation while ensuring safety and accountability. 2. Invest in AI for Safer, Smarter, and Greener Mobility The portfolio of the Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) industry demonstrates how AI can transform traffic management: Safety: AI-powered detection systems and V2X communication protect vulnerable road users and enable safe automated driving. Efficiency: Adaptive traffic control and predictive modeling optimize traffic flow, reduce congestion, and improve travel time reliability. Sustainability: Environmental and multi-modal traffic management systems powered by AI help cities meet emissions targets by dynamically managing low-emission zones and prioritizing clean mobility. 3. Support AI Pilots and Real-World Testing We support ERTICOs call for dedicated EU funding for AI factories and experimentation environments. Yunex Traffic has successfully deployed AI-driven solutions in real-world settings, and further investment in piloting and scaling such technologies is essential to accelerate adoption. 4. Strengthen Public-Private Collaboration The success of AI in mobility depends on strong public-private partnerships. We recommend that the Apply AI Strategy include mechanisms to align technical expertise from industry with public policy goals. This includes co-creation of standards, joint innovation platforms, and shared access to data and infrastructure. 5. Build Capacity and Skills for AI in Transport To ensure inclusive and ethical AI deployment, we support the development of sectoral academies and training programs. These should target cities, SMEs, and public operators, equipping them with the skills to deploy and govern AI responsibly. 6. Ensure Dedicated EU Funding in MFF & FP10 We strongly support the call for dedicated EU funding in the upcoming Multiannual Financial Framework (MFF) and Framework Programme 10 (FP10). Strategic investment in AI for mobility is essential to maintain Europes leadership in intelligent transport systems. Funding should prioritize interoperable, safe, and ethical AI solutions that can be piloted and scaled across Europe. This includes support for AI factories, digital infrastructure, and cross-border testing environments, as well as capacity-building initiatives for public authorities and SMEs.
