Ships, which reduce the amount of waste produced on board or handle the waste in an otherwise sustainable manner, should be rewarded for these efforts through a reduction of the waste fee that they have to pay when calling in an EU port. In order to ensure that the application of this reward scheme done in a harmonised way across ports, the criteria for on-board waste handling should be defined at EU level.
