The development of reusable launchers, small satellites, and private investments in space has lowered costs. This increases the number of satellites considerably. Thus, the risk of collisions and the number of collision avoidance manoeuvers will increase. There is therefore an urgent need to develop an EU approach to space traffic management. The initiative aims to develop an EU strategy for ensuring a safe and sustainable use of space while preserving EU space industry competitiveness.
