While visa-free travel continues to bring significant economic, social and cultural benefits to EU Member States and third countries, and is an important tool to promote tourism and business, the Commission’s monitoring of the EU’s visa-free regimes has shown that visa-free travel can also result in significant migration and security challenges. This proposal aims to revise the visa suspension mechanism to make it a more efficient tool for the Union to prevent irregular migration and security risks resulting from visa-free travel.
