Response to Evaluation of the EU Animal Welfare Strategy (2012-2015)

14 Jun 2019

We fully support the identified actions listed in the EU Strategy for the Protection and Welfare of Animals 2012-2015. We have demonstrated, over the last three years, on hundreds of farms, that these actions are not only possible, but welcome on-farm, by farmers, their vets and by leaders in agri-food industry. In particular: Action 1) developing tools to strengthen compliance: there are already several tools which can contribute to improved compliance through the adoption of digital/data economy principles, us included. Action 2) supporting international cooperation: existing standards organisations can and must embrace the trade and exchange of verification information to ease the trust and transparency of quality assurance and production process surveillance. Action 3) providing consumers and the public with information on animal welfare: this information must be verifiable and auditable. Again, implementation of a data driven approach will enable this to happen more easily and speedily than currently feared. This will take a change in approach and business models, but no change in standards. Action 4) optimising synergies with CAP: this is exciting and positive. As an example, we have demonstrated the possibility of addressing antibiotic overuse which can easily be used as a metric on CAP progress. Action 5) investigating the welfare of farmed fish: learnings and demonstrations of the effectiveness of digital/data economy to fisheries will assist them to implement any identified interventions in time.
