Response to Sustainable and Smart Mobility Strategy

10 Aug 2020

The Association for Metropolitan Mobility (AMM) supports the European Commission's initiative to launch the Sustainable and Smart Mobility Strategy this year, all the more so as this year, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the transport sector was one of the most affected. The European Commission's initiative to issue the Strategy comes at the right time, when transport in the EU needs a new boost to reach its emissions reduction target, a target it is still far from. We particularly appreciate the fact that the Strategy aims to revamping the European agenda for sustainable urban and regional mobility, including cycling, intermodal transport and transport-on-demand. Given that 70% of the population already lives in urban and suburban areas in Europe, and this number is growing, we believe that the Strategy should pay particular attention to the following issues: • Greater attention to be paid to metropolitan and suburban public transport, which together with individual alternative modes will reduce the number of personal cars in traffic. • Continuing the EU’s policy of encouraging ITS and MaaS solutions, which bring multiple benefits to the mobility of goods and people, allowing efficient services without building new infrastructure. • Further encourage Sustainable Urban Mobility Plans (SUMPs), which have proven their effectiveness and whose introduction in Romania, for example, has transformed urban policies, drawing attention to the need to integrate sustainable mobility in urban infrastructure planning. The Association for Metropolitan Mobility (AMM) supports the development of sustainable mobility in Romania’s urban agglomerations, the dissemination and promotion of concepts and good practices in the field of sustainable development and mobility. The association collaborates with the central and local bodies of the state administration, with national and international professional associations in the field of urban development and public transport and with other institutions or non-governmental organizations.
