Response to Consumer Agenda 2025-2030 and Action Plan on Consumers in the Single Market

The Association for Consumer Rights is the only consumer association in Malta. It is set up as an NGO and is run by an executive committee of volunteers. It was set up in 2011 and it is committed to safeguard the interests of consumers in Malta. Amongst many aims, it acts a pressure group to see that the EU and local legislation will protect consumers, and to create awareness of consumer rights to the public. The current priority concerns of this NGO are : Consumers are to be protected against payment fraud Consumers are to have REGULAR AND AFFORDABLE access to more sustainable transport options Consumers to have easier AND AFFORDABLE access to insulation, heating decarbonization and retrofit solutions to save money in the long-term (this inherently implies that consumers can switch easily to sustainable heating and cooling solutions) Consumers to have timely access to affordable, safe and effective medicines and medical devices. Also, the medicine information leaflet needs to remain in paper form not to be transformed to a QR code. This would create complexity and harm not only to elderly consumers but to anyone who is not digitally savvy. Consumers are to be protected against harmful chemicals in everyday products and in food items. Consumers are protected against discriminatory practices and unsafe AI and other emerging technologies The issues related to sustainability need urgent and top priority due to the climate collapse underway which poses an existential threat for many people unless consumer choices become much more sustainable. For this reason, these issues need to be prioritised above other consumer issues. The topics we are suggesting are also strategic and we believe these are not being adequately prioritised by EU institutions. For example, we believe that EU institutions are putting much effort already to regulate AI developments and to ensure that products from outside the EU comply with the standards set for products originating with the EU. However, because of the heavy lobbying by pesticide and chemical producers, EU institutions on their own are not really managing to protect consumer health through safe food.
