Response to Revision of the definition of engineered nanomaterial in food

10 Jan 2024

Adiconsum, as Italian BEUC member, fully agrees with the common position adopted, that considers the proposed revised definition as a serious setback for food safety and consumer protection and information. The absence, in the current nano food definition, of a numerical threshold for the number of particles being at the nano size for a food/ingredient to be considered a nanomaterial, arguably creates uncertainty for food manufacturers and control authorities alike. While we therefore welcome the setting of a quantitative threshold, the one being proposed (50%) is insufficiently protective of consumers health and food safety. We would urge the Commission to consider a nanoparticle number threshold as low as possible and in any case below 10%. The higher the nanoparticle number threshold, the higher the risk that some foods/ingredients containing nanoparticles will slip through the net and escape the safety risk assessment requirements, that apply to engineered nanomaterials as novel foods.
