Response to An EU strategy for fisheries external action

Blue Marine welcomes the opportunity to provide feedback on the call for evidence for an EU strategy on fisheries external action. In our reply (attached), we raise two important topics for consideration and improvement: (1) the discrimination of West Africa crew working on board European fishing vessels; and (2) the continued mismanagement of drifting fish aggregating devices.

Response to Roadmap towards Nature Credits

Blue Marine welcomes the opportunity to provide feedback on the Commission's Roadmap towards Nature Credits. In our reply (attached), we underline that EU nature credits could potentially be further developed only if: (1) Biodiversity harmful subsidies are first eliminated and/or re-directed to close the biodiversity financing gap; (2) They are used as a complement, not a substitute, to adequate levels of public funding; and (3) They are designed as non-offset mechanisms that channel finance towards achieving nature-positive outcomes. If further developed, EU nature credits should fulfil the following criteria: (1) Be high-integrity credits, meaning that: (a) They should be evidence-based; (b) They should be third-party validated and verified; (c) Their impacts must be communicated; (d) There must be integrated community engagement and participation; (e) There must be a fair price and an equitable sharing of benefits. (2) Take into consideration the specificities of the marine ecosystem when designing and implementing them. Finally, it is recommended that specialists of marine ecosystems integrate the EU expert group on nature credits, to ensure that the complexities and challenges related to the marine environment are understood and taken into account in the work of the expert group.
