Response to European Climate Law amendment

15 Sept 2025

DENSO is a global mobility supplier that develops electrification, powertrain, thermal, mobility electronics, and advanced devices advanced technology and components for nearly every vehicle make and model on the road today. In Europe, DENSO operates across 36 locations in 15 European countries, employing more than 13,000 people, and has a consolidated revenue of 3.9 billion. DENSO has set an ambitious target and is fully committed to achieving Carbon neutrality by 2035 without use of carbon credits, in scope 1 (direct emissions from manufacturing) & scope 2 (indirect emissions from purchased electricity & gas) by using renewable energy, hydrogen & CO capture technologies and by 2050 for scope 3 (suppliers, logistics, products). More details here. During 2023s public consultation, DENSO recommended a 2040 GHG reduction target between 75% - 80%, maintaining a linear trajectory towards climate neutrality by 2050. DENSO also recommended setting separate targets for GHG reductions and carbon removals to avoid loopholes and ensure transparency. This approach was seen as ambitious yet realistic reflecting an inclusive approach that accounts for the varying decarbonization capacities across industries, supply chains, and Member States. Our proposal allows time to allocate resources, reduce fossil fuel dependencies, and scale up investments in clean technologies while at the same time ensuring continuity in climate action without overburdening industry or society. DENSO welcomes Commissions proposal, setting a 90% GHG reduction target for 2040, alongside with newly proposed flexibilities (3% target with international credit) and assisted by the introduction of various advanced technologies such as CCU/CCS, green Hydrogen, while also recognizing the role that nuclear can play. In such occasion the target is still challenging to achieve but more feasible, and it comes closer to DENSOs recommendation. Only a technology-neutral and pragmatic approach combined does strike a balance between ambition and feasibility.
