Response to Food and Feed Safety Simplification Omnibus

13 Oct 2025

EABA Contribution Food & Feed Omnibus The European Algae Biomass Association (EABA) represents companies, research institutes, and associations across the algae value chain. We support a competitive and sustainable European algae industry in line with the EU Green Deal and Farm to Fork Strategy. The Food & Feed Omnibus is a key opportunity to modernize EU regulations and foster innovation in algae-based solutions. Current lengthy, costly, and unclear authorization processes disproportionately affect SMEs and hinder investment, leaving Europe at a competitive disadvantage. We urge the Commission to: clarify and harmonize definitions; adopt risk-based, innovation-friendly approval pathways; enable sustainability and circularity; align with international standards; and support SMEs with lower fees and simplified processes. Algae offer sustainable, resource-efficient alternatives for food and feed. Europe must ensure its regulatory framework safeguards consumer health while enabling innovation, competitiveness, and resilience. EABA and its members are ready to support the Commission in achieving these goals.

Response to Amendment of the list of products and substances authorised in organic production

3 Mar 2025

EABA (European Algae Biomass Association) represents the algae stakeholders in Europe. As part of its activities, EABA made a consultation process on Organic Regulation with academic and industry experts to support members on this specific matter and discuss the implementation as well as the hurdles for the microalgae sector. In this respect, according to the regulation about products and substances authorized in organic production (Commission Regulation (EC) No 1165/2021), articles 24(1)b and 24(7) of Council Regulation (EC) (No 848/2018), we strongly support the adoption of the amendment to Reg 2021/1165/EU authorizing the use of carbon dioxide for enrichment of water for algae production on land in closed systems. Find attached our official letter of support from the EABA.

Response to The European Oceans Pact

16 Feb 2025

The European Algae Biomass Association (EABA) can play a key role in supporting the European Ocean Pact (EOP) by using its expertise in algae biomass to promote sustainable ocean management, a thriving blue economy, and marine innovation. Key contributions include: Fostering a Sustainable Blue Economy: Algae cultivation offers eco-friendly alternatives for food, biofuels, and bioplastics, reducing reliance on fossil fuels, creating jobs in coastal areas, and protecting ecosystems. Advancing Marine Innovation: Through events like AlgaEurope, EABA encourages knowledge sharing and integrates algae innovations into ocean governance, driving technological progress. Improving Ocean Health through Farming and Seabed Restoration: Algae farming helps capture carbon, recycle nutrients, and purify water, combating eutrophication and strengthening marine resilience. Shaping Policy Frameworks: EABA advocates for policies that support sustainable aquaculture, biotechnology funding, and standardisation of algae products in line with EOP goals. Building Stakeholder Collaboration: EABAs network fosters partnerships across industries to align practices with EOP objectives and maximise environmental and economic benefits. EABA can lead efforts in algae-based solutions, innovation, policy advocacy, ocean health restoration, and cross-sector collaboration to achieve the EOPs sustainability goals. This positions algae biomass as a vital part of Europes green transition. Strategic actions include advocating for supportive regulations, increasing public awareness, building industry partnerships, and aligning with EU funding programmes.
