European Entrepreneurs CEA-PME Warns Against Unrealistic 2040 Climate Targets

Topic — The initiative amends European Climate Law to include a new 2040 climate target.

Message — The group opposes the proposed 90% reduction target, calling it an unrealistic burden on smaller firms. They request access to international carbon credits to lower compliance costs. They want the EU carbon market opened to these credits by 2026.1 2 3

Why — Accessing international credits would significantly lower the high costs of reducing emissions domestically.4 5

Impact — Environmental groups lose because the proposal shifts decarbonisation efforts away from European industrial centers.6
