Response to EU industrial maritime strategy

4 Jul 2025

The framework related to Fit for 55, ETS, and FuelEU Maritime regulations is a hard blow for shipping companies that have regular, often daily, services, simply because it's cheaper to travel by road, and haulers can't pass on the additional costs of these regulations to their shippers clients. Therefore, the whole shortsea shipping and intermodality strategy is negatively affected, as the cost of the vessel increases and, instead of shifting to maritime routes, cargo returns to road transport. Therefore, if we want commercial transport to reduce its carbon footprint, we must provide the necessary incentives that will encourage the shift of cargo to the maritime sector. Additionally, the aligment between IMO and EU Regulations is essential to avoid duplication of extra costs and bureaucratic and administrative burden.
