Response to Sustainable transport investment plan

Horse Powertrain welcomes the forthcoming Sustainable Transport Investment Plan as a tool to scale up and prioritise investments in all transport modes. This is much needed if European industry, including automotive, is to remain competitive on a global stage. We welcome the emphasis placed in the Call for Evidence on de-risking private investments in renewable and low-carbon fuels in order to scale up and boost their production in the EU. However, we do not believe that this should only be seen through the lens of maritime and aviation. While we acknowledge that there currently are more readily available technologies to support the decarbonisation of the road transport sector, increased demand for e-fuels in the road transport sector could help to stimulate the production of this cost and reduce costs for other sectors, such as aviation We therefore urge the European Commission to take a technology-open approach for the entire transport sector (including road) within the Sustainable Transport Investment Plan as part of the overarching Review on CO2 Emissions Standards for Cars and Vans, including the Car Labelling initiative, and the Clean Corporate Vehicles initiative. Alongside this, we believe a sector-agnostic approach should be taken to incentivise the production of e-fuels and low-carbon fuels: these technologies have a role to play in the reduction of emissions across all transport modes.
