Response to Digitalisation of visa procedures

21 Dec 2020

Index Ventures believes that the digitalisation of the Schengen Visa system is a positive first step towards the complete digitalisation of European visas. This initiative will of course increase the user friendliness of the existing visa application process and make it more cost-effective with fewer administrative costs. Nevertheless, the limitation of this initiative to the Schengen Visa, a visa that is mainly aimed at tourism, and only encapsulates 90 day business purposes is problematic. Employment visas are currently not under the competency of the European Union, nevertheless Index Ventures believes that the European Commission can still take some limited steps with regards to the procedural aspects of these national visas. Making this initiative (and therefore the digitalisation of visas) applicable to employment visas will not impose on the sanctity of domestic criteria for such visas. Each member state will still retain control of the conditions under which they provide such a visa, but the third-country national will have a better and smoother experience applying. Moving employment visa applications to the digital domain is critical for the future of the European startup ecosystem. Startups are already in a weaker position when compared to large Big Tech companies when looking at attracting highly-skilled or experienced talent. A smoother and, more importantly, faster visa application process taking place digitally will allow startups to get access to global talent at a faster pace and therefore be able to compete internationally.
