Response to Virtual worlds, such as metaverse

3 May 2023

Putting users first - recommendations on shaping a European approach to virtual worlds Infobip welcomes the opportunity to provide feedback to the EU's public consultation on Virtual worlds (metaverses) a vision for openness, safety, and respect. We also welcome the efforts of European institutions made so far in taking an interest in virtual worlds as a standalone industry. While we share the EU's vision of open, interoperable, and innovative virtual worlds we call on policy makers to put users first and make sure this new frontier is secure and safe. Virtual worlds will need to provide fast and seamless communication to attract and retain users within them. Users will want to have virtual interactions that are authentic and engaging, which means that businesses will need established communication channels to be able to interact with their consumers and other companies in the metaverses. At the same time, there will be a lot of separate metaverses, and moving between them will have to be straightforward. We can call them meta-galaxies as there is not yet an all-encompassing virtual universe from which a person can access them all. Finally, the question of communication between virtual worlds and the real world also remains to be addressed. Therefore, we bring to the table our recommendations to be considered when creating a comprehensive European policy framework for virtual worlds: 1. Ensuring interoperable digital identities. 2. Virtual world as a secure and safe environment. 3. Simplifying the complexities of virtual communication. 4. Leaving space for AI-assisted communication. 5. Empowering users to manage their virtual experience. These recommendations are a glimpse of what we see as crucial concepts to take into consideration for a future virtual world environment. With this new technology fast pacing our way, the governance framework for virtual worlds should be based on respect for digital rights and EU values. Communication and social interaction, in general, bridging both technological and cultural barriers, will be a significant achievement of virtual worlds. Infobip looks forward to contributing to future legislation and guidelines for thriving and safe virtual environments and, ultimately, a globally competitive digital market in the EU. Please find attached a full overview of our recommendations.
