Response to Future development and deployment of Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) in Europe

4 Dec 2025

MAIRE Group recommends that the EU considers implementing the following measures: - adoption of a harmonized regulatory framework for the development and deployment of SMRs/AMRs projects in Europe in the next decade, providing certainty to Investors throughout the entire lifecycle of SMRs/AMRs, - rationalization of current authorization and licensing practices for the application of SMRs/AMRs technologies under industrial development, in accordance with the provisions of the Affordable Energy Action Plan, - implementation of funding and the establishment of a public-private partnership to support investments required for the development of next-generation nuclear technologies. This includes advancements in a UE-based nuclear fuel industry, which is on the critical path to achieve strategic independence and to enable the deployment of SMR and AMR technologies currently under development, particularly those using HALEU, MOX and TRISO fuels, - lead the development of a highly skilled, transnational European supply chain alliance that supports the nuclear industry and secures long-term strategic autonomy and competitiveness for European industries, - inform the public about how third-generation enhanced and respectively fourth-generation nuclear reactors support the energy transition and help lower energy costs.

Response to EU rules for the calculation and reporting of recycled content in single-use plastic bottles

30 Jul 2025

MAIRE Group emphasizes the significance of the document's explicit acknowledgement of the pivotal role of chemical recycling. This plastic recycling process is particularly valued as it enables the management of plastic waste that cannot be recycled with currently available mechanical recycling technologies. In fact, achieving a higher rate of plastic waste recycling across the EU requires the integration of both mechanical and chemical recycling processes, following a technology-neutral approach. This solution promotes the development of a circular and sustainable economic model by converting waste into resources, minimizing environmental impacts throughout the entire product life cycle, and supporting EU decarbonization targets as well as the competitiveness of European industries by decreasing the EU's reliance on fossil fuels.

Response to EU Fusion Strategy

30 Jun 2025

MAIRE Group advocates the adoption of a harmonized legislative framework to support nuclear fusion, but at the same time calls for improvements to the EU nuclear fission regulations, specifically by removing obstacles to innovative modular reactor technologies. Compared to the existing nuclear reactors, AMRs and SMRs offer potential benefits such as increased safety, reduced radioactive waste, lower construction costs, and diminished environmental impacts. A more specific contribution is offered in the attached file.
