Response to Policy framework on biobased, biodegradable and compostable plastics

26 Oct 2021

Polymateria welcomes the European Commission’s intention to develop a policy framework on biobased, biodegradable and compostable plastics. We believe the upcoming framework should: • Leave the door open to innovation on new materials and applications for biodegradable plastics • Revise the current fundamental legal dichotomy between recyclable and biodegradable materials • Recognise the need to address mismanaged waste escaping into the environment and propose measures to tackle it, including biodegradation • Incentivise solutions that help to redesign materials including packaging to ensure they do no harm at the end of their lives • Consider educating and empowering consumers to do the right thing • Be underpinned by robust standards and criteria Please see the attached file for Polymateria's full submission.
