Response to Towards a Circular, Regenerative and Competitive Bioeconomy

Finnish Sawmills Association highlights the importance of wood availability and cost competitiveness for our industry. If the Availability of Wood declines, because of EU level decision, it is a negative decision for the sawmills competitiveness and weakens the position of the European sawmills. Therefore EU should without exception evaluate the impact on the wood availability, when creating new legislation. Also, we would like to see that EU boost wood use in construction. Top priority actions in construction should be: 1. Include carbon storage in wood buildings under the 2040 EU climate target, 2. Develop a market for CRCF credits linked to wood-based carbon storage, 3. Update LULUCF to include a new construction wood category and 4. Prioritise wood in public procurement and the EU Affordable Housing Plan. At this point, we would like especially to focus on the by-products: European Commission should acknowledge in the next bioeconomy strategy the importance of the sawmill industries by-products and adhere to modify investment tools and legislation in a way, which opens the possibility to create new industrial size end use opportunities.
