Response to Preventing illegal trade in wildlife

15 Oct 2021

The Sustainable Eel Group (www.sustainableeelgroup.org) is the leading Non-Government Organisation in Europe focused solely on the protection, recovery and sustainable use of the protected European eel. We welcome the European Commission's invitation to provide feedback on their revision of the EU Action Plan to tackle Wildlife Crime. The trade in 'glass eels' (young eels of the protected European eel) has recently been, by number (300 million fish) and value (€3 billion), one of the biggest, most lucrative illegal trades of protected species worldwide (Europol, 2021). The level of illegal trade in this vulnerable species has reduced by about 50% and we welcome the efforts of Member States and enforcement agencies in reducing that impact. However, much more needs to be done to reduce it to minimal levels. Our full submission is provided in a separate file. For more information, contact: a.kerr@sustainableeelgroup.org
