Response to Reporting scheme for data centres in Europe

15 Jan 2024

We welcome the drafts of the Annexes to the Delegated Act on the first phase of the establishment of a common Union rating scheme for data centers. We especially support the approach the Commission has taken to include a holistic set of indicators in Annex 2 which consider all relevant aspects of digital infrastructure, from input resources (water, energy), to energy output, provided grid flexibility, to key indicators around the IT equipment and network traffic. We applaud the well-researched and comprehensive approach for such an important area of Europes infrastructure: its digital foundation for a thriving, sustainable digital economy. Please find our comments in the attached document. Key positions include: 1. Timeline of Reporting: We are advocating for an earlier reporting deadline of 2024 to monitor digital infrastructure growth effectively. 2. Transparency: We are asking for public access to detailed data on data center operations to foster accountability and research. 3. Data for Accountability: We are proposing specific data points for public disclosure, including data center name, owner, location, and operational details. 4. ICT Hardware Resource Usage & Electronic Waste: We stress the importance of reporting on ICT equipment purchases and disposal to understand environmental impacts. These positions align with SDIA's focus on sustainability and transparency in digital infrastructure.
