Tata Steel demands industrial support before 2040 climate targets

12 Sept 2025
Message — Tata Steel demands that climate targets are legally tied to industrial support measures. They call for a stronger carbon border tax and a solution to global overcapacity. They also seek funding and access to affordable clean energy.123
Why — This would reduce their compliance costs and protect them from cheaper global competition.45
Impact — High-carbon steel producers outside Europe would lose their competitive price advantage.67

Tata Steel Nederland urges EU carbon transport infrastructure rules

11 Sept 2025
Message — The company requests independent regulatory oversight to prevent monopolies and ensure fair access to carbon storage. They advocate for government funding to bridge the price gap between storage costs and carbon taxes. Additionally, they call for a coordinated EU-wide plan for cross-border carbon transport pipelines.123
Why — These measures would protect the company from financial losses if technical issues disrupt carbon storage services.4
Impact — Taxpayers may face higher burdens if public funds are used to absorb the industry's financial risks.56

Tata Steel urges European steel mandates for corporate fleets

8 Sept 2025
Message — The company recommends incentivizing vehicles that use European battery and steel supply chains. They propose that support should only apply to steel melted and poured in Europe.123
Why — This policy would create a protected market for their specialized low-carbon steel products.45
Impact — International vehicle manufacturers would lose access to subsidies if they use non-European materials.6

Tata Steel Nederland urges protection of carbon compensation budgets

2 Sept 2025
Message — The company calls for increased compensation budgets if new sectors become eligible for aid. They also request a cap on indirect carbon costs at 1.5% of a company's gross value added.12
Why — This would protect the company's existing subsidies and prevent rising carbon prices from diluting their aid.34
Impact — National governments would face higher spending obligations to maintain aid levels for all eligible industries.5

Tata Steel Nederland Urges Stronger CBAM Anti-Circumvention Measures

26 Aug 2025
Message — TSN recommends extending the mechanism to downstream steel-intensive products to protect the European industry. They call for measures against resource shuffling and the mandatory use of mill test certificates to ensure traceability.123
Why — This would protect TSN's market share by ensuring a level playing field against cheap foreign imports.45
Impact — Non-EU producers and importers would face increased financial obligations and stricter compliance checks to access Europe.67

Tata Steel Nederland urges permanent quotas to combat overcapacity

11 Aug 2025
Message — TSN requests a permanent tariff rate quota regime for all steel products and steel-intensive goods. They propose a 'melted and poured' rule and 50% tariffs on excess imports.1234
Why — This protection preserves TSN's profitability and market share while funding its transition to carbon-neutral production.56
Impact — Non-EU exporters lose market access as quotas restrict imports to historical, pre-Chinese-boom levels.7

Tata Steel Nederland Urges Bio-Based Material Standards for Decarbonisation

23 Jun 2025
Message — The company calls for biochar sustainability rules to match existing pellet standards and wants the Union Database implemented to enable biomethane trade. They also suggest expanding the list of eligible feedstocks to avoid overregulation.123
Why — This would secure a stable, cross-border supply of renewable raw materials to replace coal and gas in steelmaking.4567
Impact — Environmental groups may worry that relaxing feedstock rules could lead to less sustainable land use practices.89

Tata Steel Nederland calls for stricter screening of carbon importers

27 Nov 2024
Message — TSN proposes requiring declarants to prioritize sourcing from registered manufacturers. They seek stricter controls to prevent the use of unverified emissions data.12
Why — This would prevent competitors from gaining an unfair advantage through inaccurate reporting.3
Impact — Unskilled importers would find it harder to justify declaring lower carbon emissions.4

Tata Steel pushes for low-carbon steel requirements in wind auctions

1 Mar 2024
Message — Tata Steel recommends auction designs that prioritize low-carbon steel and circular economy practices. They propose excluding steel from heavily subsidized foreign producers to prevent unnecessary emissions. Finally, auctions should facilitate cheaper, cost-based electricity for major industrial energy consumers.123
Why — This would lower energy-related operating costs and prioritize European steel manufacturers.45
Impact — Foreign steel producers with higher carbon footprints or market-distorting subsidies would face exclusion.6

Response to Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism

18 Nov 2021

Tata Steel endorses the Eurofer position on CBAM. Tata Steel would like to emphasise that a proper working CBAM is crucial to ensure the competitiveness of Europe’s steel industry during the process to transition to become carbon neutral. The current proposal does not fully do that. The issue of non-protected EU export sales must be addressed and indirect emissions need to be included.
