Response to Update of common rules for the allocation of slots at European Union airports

24 May 2022

Wizz Air supports the intention to return to the 80/20 rule in the winter season 2022 for fair competition and appropriate operational planning for airlines and the whole ecosystem, especially airports. For Wizz Air, S22 is already highly above 2019 capacity, Q2-Q3 2022 are projected between 132-145% on average. The recovery of the winter traffic is already demonstrated by the last winter performance highly above the European average, in Q4 2021 at 93% and Q1 2022 at 94% on average compared to 2019. We are expecting significantly higher capacity level for W22, also above S22 that proves returning passenger confidence in air travel. As a consequence, Wizz Air believes that in W22 it is possible for Europe to return to the 80/20 rule to increase competition and connectivity for the customers. As a final note we welcome the decision at least 8 weeks before the expiry of the current rules to allow proper planning for the winter season.
