As announced in the 2023 Commission work programme, the Commission intends to present a proposal on the digitalisation of travel documents and facilitation of travel. The initiative aims at facilitating travel and digitalising travel documents by establishing a uniform format for digital travel documents based on identity cards issued by EU Member States that EU citizens can use when exercising free movement.
