Evaluation of the Sewage Sludge Directive 86/278/EEC

Environment

The aim of the Sewage Sludge Directive is to protect the environment, animals and human health when using sewage sludge in agriculture. Adopted 30 years ago, the Directive does not fully match the current needs and expectations, such as the regulation of emerging contaminants like pharmaceuticals and microplastics. An evaluation will assess the performance of the Directive and analyse the risks and opportunities related to the management of sewage sludge.
