Response to EU Life sciences strategy

Focus: Biosolutions and yeast and fungi-based technologies. We welcome the EUs initiative and emphasize the need to integrate biosolutions, based on yeast and filamentous fungi into the strategy. These microbial platforms are scalable, resource-efficient, and central to Europes green transition. Key recommendations: Invest in bioreactor scale-up, digital fermentation control, and non-GMO as well as GMO-based microbial platforms Support bio-upcycling of agro-industrial side streams into food, feed, and bio-based materials Harmonize regulatory frameworks across food, feed, and biotech applications Strengthen research infrastructure and interdisciplinary skills in industrial biotechnology Incentivize academic-industry collaboration and spin-outs Fungi can produce a vast number of relevant compounds (e.g. pigments for batteries, solar panels and food colorization, antibiotics, etc.), and biomaterials (e.g. leather, building and construction materials, etc.). Thus, Yeast and fungi offer untapped potential to reduce emissions, enhance food security, and boost biotech competitiveness. Their inclusion will strengthen Europes green innovation leadership and bioeconomy.
