Response to Evaluation of marketing standards [Regulation (EU) No 1308/2013]

27 Jul 2017

The AICV (The European Cider & Fruit Wine Association) is the European trade body representing producers of cider, perry and fruit wine within the European Union (EU). Cider is predominantly a European product accounting for 69% of global consumption. However, there is to date no EU definition of cider or perry (nor a global one). To ensure the sustainable development of cider and perry production within the EU and the continued investment in orchards to meet increasing demand the AICV believes that there needs to be a marketing standard for cider and perry. Such a standard would provide a guarantee to consumers as to the basic constituent of products, which bear a “cider” or “perry” descriptor and consequently lead to the improvement of the quality and economic conditions for the production and marketing of the products. The industry is in favour of a relatively simple Marketing Standard which would clearly identify our products as fermented alcoholic beverages (alcohol from fermentation only). By developing a marketing standard for cider and perry the provenance and heritage of the products describing themselves as cider or perry will be underpinned providing consumers with the reassurance about the products bearing those descriptors.
