Response to Modernisation of the EU legislation for on-farm animal welfare for certain animals

As EW GROUP we welcome the European Commissions commitment to modernise EU animal welfare legislation. From the perspective of the poultry sector, two core topics require particular attention because they directly affect our value chain and the resilience of breeding and supply chains within the EU and beyond: (1) the phasing out of chick culling in the layer sector and (2) the possible phase-out of cages in poultry breeding. We outline our key points in the document attached on both aspects, based on our practical experience, recent research and our clear commitment to combining animal welfare with scientific and economic viability.
