Response to Effectively banning products produced, extracted or harvested with forced labour

20 Jun 2022

La Strada International, European NGO Platform against Trafficking in Human Beings, comprising 25 member NGOs and 5 associate members in 24 European countries, welcomes the call for a Europe-wide, far-reaching ban on forced labour in the supply chain and the promise of a legislative draft to be put forward in the 3rd quarter of 2022. We expect that the introduction of this ban can help to identify and further raise awareness about exploitative labour sectors in Europe and that it can become a major instrument to ensure better implementation of existing legislation on labour rights, forced labour and trafficking by companies and member state authorities. In order for the ban, to become an effective instrument, we believe it is important that several conditions are set, which we outline in the attached paper. Overall, the ban and related measures should focus on improving conditions and access to remedy for all workers, including undocumented workers and those in irregular work. Access to remedy for workers, including for the possible negative impacts of the ban on workers is essential; an assessment of the impacts of a product ban should be carried involving workers, their representatives and other specialist NGOs.
