Response to Revision of EU legislation on end-of-life vehicles

4 Dec 2023

Mazda Motor Europe supports the ambition of the European Green Deal to achieve a climate neutral, clean and circular economy by 2050. Already today, the car industry is committed to developing vehicles sustainably so that they can deliver exceptionally high recycling rates when reaching the end of their lives. Mazda remains committed to incorporating comprehensive sustainability criteria when designing and producing cars, including by increasing the use of recycled materials where appropriate. And we acknowledge that especially when compared to other consumer goods, an end-of-life vehicle is a valuable good with great opportunities for recycling, reuse and recovery. We therefore recognise and welcome the European Commissions effort to establish a more circular business model, which promotes the use of reusable, recycled and recovered materials in vehicles. With this submission to the European Commissions public consultation on the proposed End-of-Life Vehicle regulation, Mazda wishes to point out certain observations and concerns, hoping they can support discussions to achieve a more pragmatic and feasible approach (...) Response to Update of standards for the 112-based eCall in-vehicle systems

23 Nov 2023

Mazda supports the ambitions of the European Union to consistently increase the safety of vehicles running on European roads. One of the key elements is to improve consumers safety while driving is eCall, which automatically makes a free 112 emergency call if a vehicle is involved in a serious traffic accident. eCall currently works over 2G/3G circuit-switched cellular networks. As mobile operators plan to phase out 2G/3G between 2025 and 2030, there is an urgent need to adapt the system to the newest 4G/5G packet-switched communication networks. The European Commission has confirmed this need with the publication of a draft delegated regulation, which amends article 5(8) of Regulation (EU) 2015/758. To ensure a smooth transition between the communication networks and make sure that eCall will continue to work in new and existing vehicles registered in the EU, Mazda wishes to point out some issues and opportunities to be considered by co-legislators: eCall requirements should be harmonised with the EU-wide availability of the new 4G/5G system In the delegated regulation amending Regulation (EU) 2015/758, the European Commission proposes switching to the new standard as of 1 January 2027 for all new vehicles. This delegated regulation will enter into force in spring 2024 and car manufacturer needs sufficient lead time to test and implement the system and ensure its proper functioning for the new requirements. eCall requirements, which is not only communication protocol but also other requirements, should be harmonized with the EU-wide availability of the new 4G/5G system. We therefore call onto the European Commission to consider keeping the current regulation 2017/79 in place until at least January 2027.

Mazda seeks Euro 7 delay and e-fuel vehicle recognition

8 Feb 2023
Message — Mazda requests technical clarity on monitoring systems and a dedicated approval path for e-fuel vehicles. They also advocate for a realistic implementation timeline to accommodate development cycles.12
Why — This delay reduces costs and allows Mazda to better manage their long-term vehicle development schedules.34
Impact — Public health advocates lose faster reductions in road pollutants due to the proposed implementation delay.5
